Bandiera rossa is a well-known song popularized by the Communist Party in Italy. Tullio remembers children in Italy playing in the streets with a red flag, and singing this song. He also remembers his mother chiding him for singing it in the house! (Mama was more of a Socialist.)

The reality is that Tito, communist ruler of Yugoslavia, very much wanted Trieste to be added to the Yugoslavian territory. The Italians had no intention of letting that happen.

Children in America in the 1950s played "cowboys and Indians," children in northeastern Italy played "communists and nationalists."

Avanti, popolo!
